» Tidy Weekender 10 The Album (3 CD set)

Reviewed by Steve Milton / Submitted 02-12-06 20:20

Label: Tidy Trax
Format: CD
Genre: Hard Dance

The Tidy Weekenders, held at some obscure holiday camp in North Wales, have a bit of a reputation as a chemical and alcohol fuelled mash up sure to test even the most hardened clubber. The line-ups throughout the event can claim some pretty big names so it was unsurprising with this, their TW10 live release, they chose two of the biggest to record, Anne Savage and Andy Farley, along with rising stars JP & Jukesy to showcase the weekend.

It was difficult to judge each mix in the context of the weekend as I have no idea as to what time or even what day the sets were played and how they contributed to the flow of the event so I’ve decided to review them in their own right. You'll find my scores after each description.

CD1 Anne Savage

I have to admit to having a bit of a soft spot for Anne, I guess that may be down to some extent to my age and Anne being one of the female trailblazers in the DJ world. Would her mix from TW10 justify my faith? This really is live stuff, there’s an initial announcement complete with crowd noises to give you the feeling you’re right in amongst it and then Anne kicks of in a pretty forthright fashion, but you’d be silly to expect anything else I guess. The problem for me with this set is, to be honest with you, the quality of mixing. Anne chops and cuts her way through the whole set but it doesn’t really work for me. The EQ‘ing is sometimes messy making some of the tracks clash horribly with significant changes in level and gives everything a nasty staccato feel. The basics of beat matching also go array on more than one occasion. One transition was so badly train wrecked that she seemed to get fed up with trying to correct it and just slammed the next track straight in. All in all it’s a bit of a shame because there are some good tracks in her set and while a live recording really should be warts-and-all this has more warts than a pile of toads on a bad skin day.

Anne Savage mix -5/10

CD2 Andy Farley

Andy’s a bit of a legend in the hard dance scene so I was hopeful he’d do a bit better. In typical Farley style he starts off with a slightly techy feel with a definite groove going on. From here he builds the set steadily adding pace and aggression beautifully. Whilst relatively safe in terms of tricks (only a couple of spin backs), the mixing is tight and the transitions smooth with only very minor errors noticeable just to prove it’s all still live. The crowd were obviously appreciative as you can hear one reveller shouting, “You’re quality Farley” during a breakdown. I think the best way to describe this set is to say this: Any wannabe DJ wishing to know how to construct a hard house set should listen to this mix. It really defines how it should be done in my opinion. Whilst listening to this with my headphones on at work I was jigging about in my seat and attracting some very strange looks indeed from my work colleagues. It’s great, with good track choices put together in a no nonsense fashion.

Andy Farley mix - 9/10

CD3 JP & Jukesy

Finally CD3 got an airing to see what JP & Jukesy have to offer. First off we’re straight into the real hard stuff with no messing around at 155 bpm. The style is pretty dark with a touch of bounce although this fades, as the mix progresses into driving hard house that’s taking no prisoners with the usual combination of heavy bass lines and hoovers. The mixing is all pretty tight with nice clean transitions all the way through and would have no doubt sounded pretty good on a big club sound system. The pace is pretty relentless and by the end they’re pushing 159 bpm. Obviously starting where they did there’s only so far you can go in terms of progression but despite this track selection is good. It ends with track twelve fading out and then the usual “Do you want one more?” question being asked before they drop the insane Hyperlogic – “Only Me”. Anyone not out of breath by now really isn’t human. If you like it hard and fast then this is the baby for you.

JP & Jukesy mix - 8/10
