Label: Tidy
Format: 2 x CD
Genre: Hard Trance
At only 22 years of age Guyver has 10 releases on the Tidy label alone since they signed him at the tender age of only 17 and with over a quarter of a million copies sold he’s certainly a name anyone into UK hard trance should know and Tidy have shown their faith in his production talent by showcasing him in the second of their Producer Series. This double CD gives you 12 completely new and unreleased tracks on CD1 along with 14 classics and remixes on CD2. So how do they stack up?
CD1
The official press release that accompanied this CD through my letter box claimed influences from Electro, Techno, Drum and Bass and House, many inspired by Guyver’s love of movies. It starts off with a nice chunky beat at around 140 BPM with some nice use of piano and acoustic guitar with atmospheric noises, especially in track 2 (The Celestine Prophecy) that is classic Guyver. It’s all pretty solid fair, well produced and sharp with the required uplifting elements of Trance and the drive in the basslines and beat of a harder sound. As you progress through the CD the Influences start to become apparent. There no doubt as you head past tracks 5 and 6 (Jazz Hand, Heaven & Hell) that there’s some DnB in there with Heaven and Hell standing out particularly well for some stomping action which for some reason sounds like it should be faster than it actually is. Synth stabs are underlayed by a great big fat dirty bassline and chord changes highlighted with subtle female vocal. Great stuff.
As you head on through the momentum is maintained and its now the techno influences reveal themselves. There’s nothing over complicated and fussy here, the uplifting elements from the earlier tracks are replaced with shorter breakdowns and greater use of percussion with only minimal synth patterns and twisted stabs. While the weight of the tracks undoubtedly grow through the progression of the CD the BPM doesn’t and it’s perhaps for this reason that for the second half of the CD seems to be weaker. I’d have liked the sum of the parts to add up to something greater and for me he doesn’t quite pull that off. It does get slightly repetitive but being from a single producer whose style is well known I guess that’s to be expected. Having said that it is very well done and sure to find supporters in both listeners and DJ’s alike.

CD2
If you wanted a party CD full of classics and remixes and you like a bit of Hard Trance then you could do a lot worse than stick this on. With the likes of Tony De Vit, Rob Tissera, Technikal and Marc French all getting the Guyver make over treatment it is easy to see why. In line with the originals this is slightly more upbeat in the BPM department than the previous CD and kept me smiling at memories some of these tracks invoked. While all the tracks are easily recognisable from their original form there’s still the classic Guyver sound in there. None of the remixes are changed radically which is probably a good thing, why mess with something too much if it was pretty darn good in the first place? Definitely one for CD collection if you fancy a trip down memory lane with a twist!
Track List:
01. Tony De Vit feat Niki Mac - Give Me A Reason (Guyver Remix)
02. JX - Restless (Guyver Remix)
03. Guyver - Persistence
04. Guyver - Man On The Moon
05. Guyver - Serious Sound
06. Guyver - Differences
07. Euphony - Carte Blanche
08. Technikal & Marc French - Mad & Confused (Guyver Remix)
09. Miss Behavin - Such A Good Feeling (Lee Haslam & Guyver Remix)
10. Jon The Dentist & Ollie Jaye - Feels So Good (Guyver Remix)
11. Rob Tissera - Burning (Guyver Remix)
12. Guyver - Trapped
13. Guyver & Rob Tissera - Feel The Drums
14. Guyver - You'll Know It
For one so young Guyver manages to combine everything amazingly well. He shows his undoubted ability in the studio and both he and Tidy should be well pleased with the outcome as it’s sure to be a success

From: Daniel K on 13th Feb 2007 10:27.09 I used to be huge fan of Guyver. 'Trapped' was my fave for ages. Glad to see he's still looking at new innovations.
